May Newsletter

May is SPRING! The awakening of the flowers. Trees and plants, the return of the migrating birds, warmer weather and more daylight!
The CCoA is celebrating Spring with an awesome Mother’s Day Weekend Art Fair at Windrose on the Hudson, where 68 artists and artisans will be showing and selling their work, where children can make a free Mother’s Day card, and where everyone can enjoy a beautiful day, or two!
The long-awaited Spring issue of the New Croton Review will be released on May 2, with the publication party on May 17 (see below).
Improving our Third Thursdays Artists Happy Hour experience, we’ll be downstairs at The Grand, where each month we’ll showcase various artists’ creations in a slideshow video loop and expand to include an hour of Artist Open Mic.
We’re also thrilled to celebrate the release of artist, actor and activist Richard Eagan’s much-anticipated memoir, An Art Memoir of the Coney Island Hysterical Society, launching at the Black Cow.
And finally, we’re introducing a brand new section featuring Calls for Art, Artists and Submissions
And if you could not attend our exceedingly popular event “The Grand Lit: In Celebration of Poetry Month” in April, we have a recap and photos of the event. Reviews of past events are located toward the end of this newsletter.

Let's Talk

Symphony Knoll | 15 Mount Airy Road S. | Croton-on-Hudson, NY 10520
May 20, 2026, 7:30 pm
Cornelia Cotton will be on vacation in May and has asked Steve Jacoby to lead Let's Talk on May 20, at 7:30 pm at Symphony Knoll. It will be a celebration of Sound in Literature — any kind of literature: poetry, story, lyric, jingle, books for children. Bring something you love to read out loud (or know by heart) because of the spooky, delicious, or silly sounds. Sound that doesn’t have meaning or overwhelms the meaning or is crucial to setting the stage; sounds that thrill, chill, or make us laugh.

Hysterical Coney Island
Book Launch

The Black Cow and By the Dam Books | 4 Old Post Road South | Croton-on-Hudson, NY 10520
May 28, 2026, 6 pm
Join us for a lively conversation, readings and book signing with Richard Eagan, artist, actor and Hysterical Coney Island activist!
Do we retreat to our studios, or jump in and make a difference?
This vivid memoir tells how two Brooklyn artists and their peers helped revive Coney Island at a time of decline in the late 1970s. Founding the Hysterical Society in 1981, they struck a spark that would grow to become a creative movement that historian Charles Denson calls “The Artists’ Renaissance” in Coney Island.
Blending studio practice with life on the boardwalk, this is a personal story of art, community and cultural renewal — featuring contributions from Harvey Fierstein, Richard Snow, Ann Aptaker and Aaron Beebe.

Viva the Divas

Croton Free Library | 171 Cleveland Drive | Croton-on-Hudson, NY 10520
May 31, 2 pm
Viva the Divas is a fun yet enlightening musical revue directed by Fran DiSarro, and starring Garrison resident, songstress and thespian, Goldee Greene. It celebrates several goddesses of the lyric art. Each has her own signature style, schtick—or both: Ethel Waters’s 1920’s flapper garb, Bessie Smith’s theatrical antics, Mae West’s arch, suggestive banter, Marlene Dietrich’s top hat and attitude. And of course, Billie Holiday’s white gardenia, as well as the glittering crown perched on the lovely head of Queen of the Blues Dinah Washington. Shades of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Eartha Kitt, Lena Horne, and Edith Piaf also grace the stage. And count on at least one operatic diva character to jump in.
Award-winning Music Director Tom McCoy will accompany the stellar David Winograd on bass. Musical fare includes standard songs ranging from the 1920s through the fifties, as well as a couple of originals.

Apply Now for DRIFT
BAU 2026 Annual Juried Open Call
Entry deadline: midnight, June 20, 2026
Show dates: August 7, 2026–September 6, 2026
To drift is to let go, to surrender to a current; it is a state of being in slow motion. To drift is the serene space between leaving and arriving. DRIFT, our annual juried open + awards exhibition, asks you to explore gradual movement, whether through physical displacement or the wandering of thoughts or ideas. DRIFT investigates what happens when we let go. It examines the marks left behind by that which has passed or the blurring of memory.
BAU (Beacon Artist Union) Gallery invites artists 18+ to apply with work that relates to visual interpretations of DRIFT. All media accepted.

Visionary Art Collective
The Midnight Garden — NYC Pop-Up Exhibition
Curated by Jessica Libor
Deadline to appply: May 31, 2026 11:59 pm
The Midnight Garden centers on themes of cultivation, transformation, and unseen processes of growth. Framed as a space of quiet unfolding, the garden becomes a metaphor for creative practice and emotional life, where cycles of blooming, decay and renewal coexist. We’re seeking work that speaks to or challenges these ideas, interpreted through each artist’s lens.
Selected work will be featured in a pop-up exhibition in New York City this summer, including an opening reception and programming throughout the show.
Artists will also be highlighted in New Visionary Magazine, with all featured work available on Artsy through Warnes Contemporary.

Croton has a long and continuing tradition of being a magnet for artists of all disciplines. The Croton Council on the Arts was born and grew out of this tradition and Croton’s 1976 Bicentennial celebrations. Local artists and supporters joined forces to stage events for the public in Croton and surrounding villages. Under poet and President Ruth Lisa Schechter’s dynamic leadership, the new council organized many productions in theater and dance, exhibitions of painting, sculpture, photography, and musical recitals and poetry readings. The Croton Review, a literary magazine, was published annually in the 1980s. Croton residents greeted these contributions to our Village with great enthusiasm and CCoA quickly became a valuable asset in the cultural life of our community.
CCoA is in constant need of volunteers to help us run our activities, and come up with new ones. It's also a great way to network and enhance your sense of community. CLICK HERE to send email to us if you have questions or want to get involved with CCoA activities.
